FAQ

How much do I repay on my student loan?

You repay 9% of your income over the threshold for your plan (Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000 a year), or 6% of income over £21,000 for a Postgraduate Loan.

Does the amount I owe change what I repay?

No. What you repay depends on your income, not on the balance. The balance (borrowed plus interest) only affects how long you repay.

What if I have a Postgraduate Loan and another plan?

You repay 6% of income over the Postgraduate Loan threshold plus 9% of income over the threshold of your other plan. This calculator adds the two.

What counts as income?

Income before tax and other deductions, including bonuses and overtime.

Why is my monthly figure lower than a tenth of the yearly?

Employers use monthly thresholds and repayments are shown in whole pounds rounded down. If your pay is uneven, the yearly total can differ; you can ask for a refund if yearly income is below the threshold.

Is this calculator affiliated with the UK government?

No. It is an independent educational estimate. Your employer or HMRC works out your actual deductions.
